Tasmania lies between the Australian mainland and
the Antarctic ... and it always feels closer to the latter when the winter winds
blow! But it's a beautiful island and well worth a visit if you're looking for
somewhere different.
Start with this interactive
tour:.
Here's a great site to use to plan
your trip.
Click on the region to learn more about it.
The great thing about Tasmania is its size - it's
only around 26,000 square miles and you can comfortably drive Hobart to
Launceston in two and a half hours, and from Launceston to Burnie in less. In
many parts of the state roads are often winding, with ascents and descents over
hilly and mountainous regions. You should always allow extra time for your
journey, especially in areas like the West Coast. Check local conditions on
exposed and elevated roads, where frost, ice and snow can occur.
This page has estimated
driving distances between some cities.
Tassie was settled as a penal colony in the early
days and has seen some tragedies in its time - this site gives one man's view of
the island's
history.
Visitors go to see the historical buildings and
there are some lovely old houses - many of which have been turned into great B
& Bs. Visit this site to see some
examples of what's on offer.
If you enjoy good food, you'll love your time in
Tassie - here's a
sample of what's available.
Yum ...
When you get back, why not write
a book about your travels:
